From the Request screen, you can submit requests for shift changes after a schedule is finalized. Or respond to colleagues' requests involving you (such as split or swap).
The NurseBrite mobile app supports the following types of requests at the time of writing:
- Giveaway request: give away future shifts to your colleagues.
- Split request: split the hours of one of your shifts into multiple (up to 3) portions. And either give some of those hours to your colleagues or take those hours off.
- Swap request: swap future shifts with your colleagues.
- Event request: request to take time off on dates you already have shifts scheduled. Or let your facility know you will not be available to work on specific future dates.
All requests created by you or involve you are organized as lists of cards under these three tabs on the Requests screen - Unconfirmed, Pending, and Processed.
Requests UI overview
Unconfirmed requests
When a giveaway/split/swap request is created, the first step is for the involved colleague to confirm it. These requests are displayed as a list of cards under the Unconfirmed tab. Giveaway/split/swap requests created by colleagues and require you to confirm are also displayed here.
When an unconfirmed request is confirmed, the corresponding card will be moved to the Pending tab. And when a request is denied or withdrawn, the corresponding card will be moved to the Processed tab.
Pending requests
Any requests pending approval are displayed under the Pending tab.
When a pending request is approved, rejected, or withdrawn, the corresponding card will be moved to the Processed tab.
Processed requests
Any requests that have been denied, withdrawn, approved, or rejected are displayed under the Processed tab.
Navigate the request list
When there are a large number of requests, you can apply filters or change the sorting order of each request list to help you find what you are looking for.
You will get notifications when there are new giveaway/split/swap requests involving you or when the status of your requests changes (e.g., got approved or rejected). If you happen to be viewing the corresponding request list at the time, the refresh symbol (two arrows forming a circle) right below the tabs will become enabled with a red dot indicating new updates. Tapping on the refresh symbol would refresh the list. This manual refresh is intended to avoid interfering with what you are doing on the UI (e.g., scrolling through the list looking for a certain request). However, if you are not viewing the corresponding request list when a relevant notification comes in, it will refresh automatically.
Create and manage requests (partner facility)
General rules
Although each type of request is different, some rules generally apply to all types of requests:
- Requests can only be created for partner facilities.
- With one exception - requests for non-partner facilities can be created as the result of colleagues bidding on open shifts you posted. More on this will be covered later in this chapter.
- Requests can only be created on current or future dates.
- Requests cannot be created on dates you already have other requests pending approval.
- Your facility can configure specific criteria for the submission of requests.
- Certain requests may not be allowed during the self-scheduling time window.
- Shift-related requests (e.g., swap) may not be allowed when it is already too close to the start time of the involved shift.
To create a new request, tap the + symbol on the top bar, then choose the type of request you want to create from the action sheet. You will then be taken to the respective request creation screen.

Although you can only create requests for partner facilities, there is one exception - requests for non-partner facilities can be created as a result of colleagues bidding on open shifts you posted. And these requests will appear under the Pending tab.
Because non-partner facilities are not using NurseBrite yet, even though requests were created for you in the NurseBrite mobile app, you will still need to go through the request submission process per your facility. And you should manually update the status of those requests in the app after they are either approved or rejected.
To manually update the status of such requests, tap on the corresponding card to go to the Request details screen. On that screen, tap the check mark symbol, then choose either Mark as approved or Mark as rejected from the action sheet depending on the actual results from your facility.
After you manually update the request's status, the corresponding card will be moved to the Processed tab. If the request is marked as approved, your (and your colleague's) shifts will be updated automatically without requiring further action.
